چکیده

We analyze the distribution of stars of arbitrary mass function g(m) around a massive black hole (MBH). Unless g is strongly dominated by light stars, the steady-state distribution function approaches a power-law in specific energy x ≡ −E/mσ2 < xmax with index p = m/4M0, where E is the energy, σ the typical velocity dispersion of unbound stars, and M0 the mass averaged over mgx p max. For light-dominated g, p becomes non-linear in m and can grow as large as 3/2 – much steeper than previously thought. A simple prescription for the stellar density profile around MBHs is provided. The Galactic Center as a laboratory for extreme mass ratio gravitational wave source dynamics

The massive Galactic black hole and the stars around it are a unique laboratory for studying how relaxation processes lead to close interactions of stars and compact remnants with the central massive black hole, in particular those leading to the emission of gravitational waves. I review new results on the processes of strong mass segregation and loss-cone refilling by massive perturbers and re...

Strong Mass Segregation around a Massive Black Hole

We show that the mass-segregation solution for the steady state distribution of stars around a massive black hole (MBH) has two branches: the known weak segregation solution (Bahcall & Wolf 1977), and a newly discovered strong segregation solution, presented here. The nature of the solution depends on the heavy-tolight stellar mass ratio MH/ML and on the unbound population number ratio NH/NL, t...

Stellar Remnants in Galactic Nuclei : Mass Segregation

The study of how stars distribute themselves around a massive black hole (MBH) in the center of a galaxy is an important prerequisite for the understanding of many galactic-center processes. These include the observed overabundance of point X-ray sources at the Galactic center, the prediction of rates and characteristics of tidal disruptions of extended stars by the MBH and of inspirals of comp...

Formation of Massive Black Holes in Dense Star Clusters. I. Mass Segregation and Core Collapse

We study the early dynamical evolution of young, dense star clusters using Monte Carlo simulations for systems with up to N = 10 stars. Rapid mass segregation of massive main-sequence stars and the development of the Spitzer instability can drive these systems to core collapse in a small fraction of the initial half-mass relaxation time. If the core collapse time is less than the lifetime of th...

Transition from inspiral to plunge for a compact body in a circular equatorial orbit around a massive, spinning black hole

There are three regimes of gravitational-radiation-reaction-induced inspiral for a compact body with mass m , in a circular, equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole with mass M@m: ~i! the adiabatic inspiral regime, in which the body gradually descends through a sequence of circular, geodesic orbits; ~ii! a transition regime, near the innermost stable circular orbit ~isco!; ~iii! the plunge re...
